Organisation of Resources

This week we have allocated each group member organisation of either props, costumes or equipment. This involved deciding which resources we would use, taking photos and annotating each image in accordance to why we have chosen to use it. Many of the items we have chosen are a specific colour, adding to mise-en-scene and aiding communication to the audience on a subconscious level.
This organisation helped us work out which items would need to be sourced and where from. We were also able to plan which items would be needed in each scene meaning we only need to bring required items to each filming session, making the filming process more efficient.

Final Props List

Our props didn't different much to our initial list that we created. Although we had said that we were going to use laminated sheets with numbers on we were unable to laminate these so we just used paper. All the props that we specified that we were going to use for the nursing scene we achieved using these and more. This enabled us to gain stronger mise- en- scene within the scene.

Casting Decision

Our auditions proved very successful in determining who we wanted to play each role within our film.

Two perspective auditionees dropped out of the audition meaning only four people auditioned rather than the previously expected six.

During the auditions, we first asked the actors to present their own interpretation of the scene using their own charactersiation, gestures etc. Due to the nature of the script, in most cases the female character came across as more dominant. The next time they tried the scene, we directed the female character to be more reserved and for the male character to be more agressive and dominant. This allowed us to observe how well each actor reposonded to direction.

Tayo O'Martains- We chose Tayo to play Mark as we felt that he put the most emotion into the scene and really gave it his all. He seemed very comfortable in front of the cameras and interacted with his partner- something that was not seen be any of the other auditionees. His partner expressed feeling genuinly scared when he was shouting at her!

Kirsty Dwyer- We chose Kirsty to play our central female role as we felt, like Tayo that she gave a very emotive performance. She also responded well to direction, showing different emotions and changing characterisation when asked. Her pairing with Tayo seemed very genuine.

Catherine Turner- Due to unrelated reasons one of our auditioness decided she did not want to take part in our final piece. Although Catherine did not audition we are aware of her acting ability from outside projects and know that she is capable of taking on the minor role of Nurse 1.

Matt Thomas- We chose Matt as Nurse 2 as we felt that his personality shown through his acting and this would help the audience realte to his character. We were also impressed that he managed to continue acting even after saying a line wrong.

Casting Information

Costumes

Antagonist-
We will cast the antagonist as a male as we want him to look sinister and mysterious as his identity will be hidden this will make the audience feel scared of him. This character is suggested to be the killer. This male will be shown to be in his mid thirties. He will look rugged and dirty as this denotes to the audience that he shouldn’t be in the surroundings that are shown in the film.

The Psycho from the film Psycho is a typical antagonist. The males hidden identity makes the audience feel scared of him. We will use him as an example within our film.

Protagonist-
We will cast the protagonist as a female. This follows the conventions of other horror films as normally the protagonist is presented as a female. She will be married to her partner, Mark. Both these characters will be in their late twenties as they have their own house and mortgage. She will be shown in pale coloured costumes and make up as this connotes her innocence to her audience.

Casey Becker from Scream is a good example of a female protagonist; she is presented within the film wearing pale coloured and pale makeup to show her innocence. We will use her as an example when filming our film.

Audition Photos

These pictures show the auditions. Before we started to film, we showed the people the script and directed them on how they should act explaining the directions on the script.

The picture above shows Matt and Kirsty practising before their audition. We allowed them time to practise so they felt comfortable in front of the cameras as they knew what they were doing.

Jenny and Tayo alos practised.

Abi, and Jeni directed the auditions and wrote down there thoughts on the audition emphasising the good and bad points so when we discuss the auditions as a group we are able to choose an appropriate character. Lauren and Laura worked the cameras ensuring that the cameras were filming correctly and where positioned in the correct place.

Audition Script

This is the section of script we will use within the audition process. We chose this scene as it involves the two main speaking parts which will help us judge who is most suitable for the main roles. This scene requires the actors to convey a lot of emotion and it will be interesting to see how each auditionee interprets the character. There is the prospect of some of the characterisation that takes place at the audition being brought forward to the final piece if we consider it to be particularly effective.
Each character's lines have been highlighted in a specific colour to aid the auditionee.

Audition Schedule

This week we will be auditioning actors for our piece. This schedule denotes the date and time it will be held and the approximate timings each audition. Contingency time has been left at the end of the whole audition process in the case of over-running. This schedule will act as a reference and aid our time-management during the audition process.

Group Meeting- Monday 7th December

The group held a meeting in order to discuss the tasks that needed to be done this week. We managed to discuss all of the points which we felt needed to be discussed and solve the issues. We discussed all areas of the work we needed to work on. We talked about where and when our auditions should be held and who should be in charge of them. We also talked about the rest of the tasks in order to assign pieces of work to each individual in the group so that the group could manage to get all of the work done quickly, efficiently and effectively. Some minutes of the meeting were made to record what was said.

Group Update

In the previous meetings we have been discussing and creating the script, animatic and conducting our target audience research. Creating the script meant that we are able to start the auditions as we can present out script when auditioning. This task went well. The group split in half to complete this task, Abi and I created this. We created 3 different versions and looked a previous script to make sure ours was correct and an accurate amount of detail and information had been added.

As a group we also created the animatic. The overall piece of work was really good as all points in the storyboard were covered in detail and this was clearly seen in the video. We had some problems with this as the camera that we needed to use wasn’t working as it should. This delayed the filming of the storyboard by a few days. This was no problems as in the next lesson it was completed and uploaded.

The last task that we completed this week was the research. This research was based around the target audience. A questionnaire was produced and it was then completed by a range of people. In collecting the information from the research this enabled the group to have a clear target audience for our film, so when producing the film it would be successful and popular.

Animatic Storyboard

This is the video we created for our animatic storyboard, it consists of images drawn by a group member of each shot in our opening. We have then spoken over the pictures explaining what is going to happen, the shot type and duration of the clip. It is an alternative to the photo storyboard.

Consent Forms

As we will be filming other people, other than ourselves, it is essential that we gain consent from all the people we use in any of our footage. We have made this possible by creating consent forms for the participant and their parent (if under 18) to sign. The consent form states that the footage will have to be publicily placed on youtube, and will also be publicily viewed.
Here is a copy of the consent form created:

Target Audience Profile

In order to ensure that our film is as successful as possible we need to have a clear target audience to aim the film to. Therefore as a group we researched the typical target audience of a psychological horror in order to make our film as successful and as popular as possible.

Target Audience Research Questionnaire

We conducted a questionnaire to give the group a wider knowledge of the type of audience that would view our film. Through the results we gathered we have an extensive insight into no only what our target audience would expect from a horror film, but which other types of media they regularly consume, which would be vital if we were producing the piece commercially.

Final Script

This is the final script that will be used within our opening sequence. After creating an initial and intermediate script we were able to create this. In creating the initial and intermediate script we were able to put all the groups ideas together, we were also able to outline what needed to be changed and what should be added after getting feedback. To help us create our final script we looked at a script of an Eastenders scene, looking at this helped us with the layout as we were able to see where the script and scene directions should be placed so characters are able to read it clearly and notes can be added.

Final Script

Intermediate Script

After writing the initial script we went away to improve it and type it up in more of a script format, after we thought we had completed the script we printed it out and let several people see this copy to check for mistakes and to suggest improvments. We could then go away and write the final script with no errors and better ideas.

Initial Script

As a group we got together to discuss what we thought needed to go into the script, we wrote down an initial script to later improve.

It includes the basis of our opening and shows the characters involved.

There are a few stage directions but more need to be added.
